Teacher feedback write up

My teacher feedback left me very disappointing with my predicted grade and the points made about my magazine, however most of them do come across at the same angle as other points made in the student peer assessment. Many of them are about pictures and how they have been manipulated and laid out. To solve this i will as i have done, re take some of my pictures and manipulate them all differently this time. Also pointed out was my title, my teacher told me that it looks like a football strip. Although i completely disagree with this i am going to try and resolve this by placing the splat layer behind the text to make it less obvious. Next the entire layout of my title page was seen as boring and awkward. Therefore i am going to change the layout of my cover and change the size of some of the cover stories to make some look more important than others. Next, my contents page was also pointed out to be seen as too messy. Therefore i am going to completely start it again and create a new layout that would hopefully make it look more organised. My double page spread will not be changing much even after points were shown, i am only going top make the article larger and then reduce the font size while also taking away some of the text covering the picture.

Peer assessment of my draft

To get a fair opinion on my draft work i asked a couple of my class members to evaluate my work and score it against a requirements sheet. This sheet will help in many ways as it then gives me ideas of what needs improving and how i could then take action.

This sheet shows that my draft work in their opinion wasn't of a very good standard. However, there were good points that received a level three score, which is very good for a draft piece of work. The sheet shows that my variety of shooting and quality of manipulation on my shots need to be improved as this seriously effected the rest of my scores. Therefore as shown before in my blog i have taken action and re taken some of my shots at different locations with different angles and looks to give a very different look to my draft.
Therefore i believe that if i refine my skills when manipulating my pictures it should make an overall better looking piece of work.

The other view that i got from a class member gave a lot of better marks overall but still showed the same disappointing spots in my draft work. The scores were all improved to the previous person but again my pictures and the manipulation of them let me down. Therefore i shall try to improve my manipulation of all my pictures, new and the same as my draft to give me a good level piece of work which will hopefully be awarded a good level 3 or 4.

Final Pictures for magazine

After receiving feedback on my draft magazine, a main concern was my pictures. This included how and where they were shot and then how they were manipulated and changed in Photoshop.  Therefore i decided to take a couple of my shots again. For both of them i used a new location and tried a better quality camera.
However, i believe all of my shots of my feature artist were good enough not to be shot again, just my technique of manipulating them in Photoshop needs to be improved.

This is my new band shot for my contents page feature list. My previous one was very bland and didn't look very good when taken on the less quality camera. Therefore this shot was taken from a different location and on a different camera. The location seemed a bit more light, this means for a better shot and an easier to manipulate picture. To make the picture look less boring and more engaging i made the artists look like they were engaging in conversation. This made for a more exciting and lively picture. However i will then have to make sure that i crop out the window and bar at the side to keep the setting as i want it to look in my picture.

This second photo is for my single artist for my contents page. The last one tried to be too energetic and with the use of a poor camera didn't really work too well. My manipulation of pictures then let me down as well as the final product looked very poor. This shot is a lot brighter and adds me another variation in shot and angle which makes my overall work look a better quality.

draft evaluation question 5

I have tried to attract my specific audience to my magazine in many ways. The first of which is to do with my colour scheme. Many large magazines that are suited to this genre use a three colour pallet; this usually consists of two base colours of black and white. They then all have a brighter colour which helps it stand out and makes the larger and more significant articles catch the reader’s eye and brings them in to purchasing the magazine. I however wanted the feeling of a new, fresh and unique magazine to shine out even when the magazine is just on a magazine stand. Therefore I decided to stick with the base of white and black to give the reader a feeling of familiarity when they engage with my magazine. But then I chose a very bright green to be my third colour. I chose green because it is very vibrant and youthful and fun and could also represent the huge variety that this genre of music has to offer. Plus, green is a very under used colour in the music magazine market, therefore my magazine will instantly stand out to the reader and hopefully with the use of a unique colour the reader would then make a direct link to the colour green and my magazine.
Another way I tried to attract my audience is the informal language used throughout my work. Because my target audience is of the student years it was important I got the language level right so that it wasn’t too formal or too playful and childish. However I believe I have a very informal yet addressing use of language which brings the reader in to a friendly to read magazine. I know this will attract my audience because when doing analysis of similar magazines this is the same language that they used throughout magazines such as NME and Q. Plus my research told me that loyal fans of rivalling magazines bought those magazines every issue because of the huge amount of information on each artist inside. They liked the use of in depth interviews of big bands and new and up and coming ones. I therefore thought I must do an interview for my double page spread article, I also decided to do it on a new and rising band so that it gave the reader a feel for the new music to be hitting their favourite genre.
Finally I have tried to attract my reader with the choice of artists on the front cover and on my contents page. My target audience is of a male majority, this meant that I had to feature plenty of male artists throughout my magazine. You can easily see I have done this on my contents page with bands such as Coldplay and Noel Gallagher and the high flying birds.
Through analysis and research I have managed to make a few assumptions about my target audience and their interests. I know that fans of this genre are music mad, they don’t go anywhere without an mp3 or a radio. They like to keep track of the big hitters of the genre and their new singles but also to know the smaller and maybe up and coming bands. They enjoy nothing more than to go to a gig with mates to enjoy the real live experience, whether these are at a small bar watching a small newly formed band or at Glastonbury where the huge variety of alternative rock can be found each and every year. However I cannot make any judgements of clothing or attitudes because the genre of music is so large and ever changing. They could be loud, energetic and colourful like bands such as MUSE and Coldplay, but they could just as well be smarter, more casual and easy going and into more classic alternative rock with a down to earth feel about it from bands such as Elbow.

draft evaluation question 4

My magazine has a very specific target audience of the student years and a mainly male majority of readership. I came to this decision after my analysis section showed me that similar magazines that would be competing for the same market have the same sort of male dominated readership. I checked three separate magazines and their media packs to see what my rough target audience should be. Q, NME and Kerrang! All showed me that my target audience should be from around the age of 16 to about 24. All of these magazines also have a male majority of readership which bought me to the conclusion that the genre itself has more male fans than female, this meant that if my magazine was going to attract the most readers in a large market I had to try and appeal to student males, the target market for this genre and all competing magazines.
I have tried to appeal to my target market in the choices I’ve made on the appearance of my magazine, the language used in my articles and the bands featured on the contents page. As I wanted to appeal to a more male audience I tried to include a large majority of male artists on my contents page, this was fairly easy as the genre itself is mainly full of male artists and bands such as Coldplay, Elbow and the Killers. This meant that I was appealing to the male majority of potential readers, which was a good start.
Also, I tried to use very informal and engaging language in my article and on my contents page. I did this because the use of informal language would appeal to a younger audience, as required if I’m going to appeal to my target market. Also, after my research I found that the current magazines out there are read by so many people because they are full of interviews that allow the reader to know more about their favourite bands and new and up and coming bands. Therefore I felt that I had to do an interview style article for my double page spread. I also felt like I had to use an up and coming band for my article, my research told me that many people in my target audience read the currently available magazines to keep up with the latest new bands and trends. Therefore I felt that an interview with a new band would be a very good idea. My colour scheme also took into consideration what the current market used. My research told me that the current magazines for this genre used a base colour of black and white and then used a brighter colour to engage the reader, this colour was usually red. However I wanted to use a different colour to really stand out on a magazine shelf and bring readers in from the very start. Therefore I chose to use green; this is a very youthful colour which connotes happiness and also neutrality which could represent the huge variety of music available in this genre. Plus it is a much underused colour in music magazines, which means it would easily be seen and previous readers of my magazine would make a direct link to the colour green and my magazine making it easily remember able.
I believe that it is very important to be selective when choosing a target audience for many reasons. Firstly, by choosing a specific age range and gender, it is easier for the magazine writers to write for a specific audience. For example, if you weren’t specific with who your target audience was, your writers would have a very difficult task writing an article that would appeal to someone of the age of 8 and 80. The use of simple words that younger kids would know is not the makings of an engaging article for the older generations; therefore I believe it is very important to be specific with who your market consists of.
Secondly, the market must be specific because you have to decide what artists to feature inside your magazine. If your market is both male and female of equal proportions then you would have to feature the same amount of male and female artists. That in this genre of music would be very difficult because this genre of music seems to be very male dominant with the biggest female band probably being Paramore, who’s only female is the singer. Therefore I believe it is very important that when designing a magazine the person takes into account an age range they wish to appeal for and which gender they think would be more interested in that genre of music.
However by being selective you do exclude certain audiences from being interested in your magazine. This is by using such formal language, it then therefore doesn’t appeal to an older generation as much as my current target audience. But saying that, my genre of music doesn’t appeal to the older generations on a large scale anyway. The only real market I may miss out on by making my target audience so specific is the female population of the same age. My research told me that all magazines suited to this genre of music all appealed to men more than women. Therefore I did some research one the genre itself and Alternative rock is known to have a more male audience than female. This however doesn’t mean any women like the genre. I believe the only real way my magazine does exclude them is with the choices of bands found on my contents page. On the other hand there was no real way around this as the genre of music is dominated by male artists and female artists are very rare indeed in this genre.

Draft evaluation Question 3

Any magazine that wants to make it out in the real world market needs a media institution to publish their magazine and promote it to the potential fans that could be interested in buying it. But as well as this in this day and age, it is also about synergy and the use of websites, video and pictures all in one place as well as the paper copy of all the articles. For my magazine I chose Bauer magazine group. I chose them for many reasons.
Firstly, I chose them because they currently publish two highly known music magazines, ‘Q’ and ‘Kerrang!’ These two magazines are two of the most popular in the U.K and both have a crossover of music genre toward my chosen music genre, meaning Bauer media group are already experienced in publishing high quality and high demand magazines. As well as this these two magazines also appeal to a rather large majority audience of male students. After analysis I saw that Kerrang! Has a mean age of reader of 22, which exactly the sort of audience member I am looking for. While also looking through their media pack it showed that 87% of their readers buy every issue. This shows that Bauer know how to publish and promote a top quality and well selling magazine. Also while studying Q’s media pack it showed that they also have a male majority audience at a percentage of 68%. Q magazine also has a huge readership, a total of 570,000 according to a reader poll in 2008. All of this information tells me that Bauer media group know how to make a magazine popular and gather them a patriotic and loyal fan base.
Another reason I chose them was because of what I believe the future of music magazines is. More and more technology is being used for everything now, and books and newspapers are now going out of trend and being replaced by technology based platform versions of them. This can only mean that soon the music magazine fan base will turn to technology in the very near and upcoming future. However, Bauer media group also have a strong hand in television in radio. The most significant to me of which is Kerrang! TV and radio. These are ran and available to everyone and play music of their specific genre, suited to their target audience. These stations while also bringing in more fans can also are used to promote the magazine which again would end up making a more successful magazine.
However I believe the fact that they have already got a hand in the technology platforms of music is the biggest advantage to choosing Bauer. With the ever growing popularity of e-books and online newspapers the almost certain decline is paper magazine sales must be ever faster approaching. Therefore, choosing Bauer media group means that with their already strong technology hand we can create a website for extra articles, news and videos; we can have a radio station playing the best music from our genre while also promoting our other various items such as our magazine. Plus, we could then move on to applications for phones and online subscribers to our online magazine. I believe choosing Bauer media group means we will have a head start on adapting to the technology world once the decline in magazine sales arrives.

Draft evaluation Question 2

My main artist who is featured on my cover and in my double page spread is Rhys Jenkins, he is 18 and I believe his general appearance already suits the genre of music when in comparison with bands such as Elbow and R.E.M. His clothing in the shots I took is very neat yet has a casual look to it. By choosing the alternative rock genre I give myself a wide spectrum of choices of expression, location and appearance that I can choose from but I believe the most effective shots were to be of a smarter and more old fashioned side of the genre like the bands previously named.
In the pictures you can see he is wearing a smart pair of jeans, these give off a casual yet smart look to the artist which is used by some by some bands in the genre. On the cover page you can see he’s wearing a slightly more casual and almost indie style jacket but it still gives off a neat and formal feel at the same time as looking fashionable and suiting the genre of music. By making the shot a long shot it also allows the reader to see the footwear of the artist, in this picture he is wearing a fairly plain pair of Vans, this is a popular brand, especially in this genre of music.
The clothing slightly changes on the double page spread with the addition of a thick long fleece coat. This looks very smart in the pictures and the dark colour adds to the formal look of the artist and makes the greyscale effect work even well on the spread. I decided to use this effect on the double page spread as I thought it gave off the old fashioned and formal feel to the picture while it also resembled pictures taken off similar artists such as Elbow, as seen on my blog wallpaper.
I used a blank background for the shots for one main reason. I didn’t want any props or background interference to take away the reader’s attention from the artist himself. I wanted to do this because as my artist profile says, the artist is part of a rising band which therefore might not be known by the majority of readers yet. Therefore I wanted to completely focus on the artist and I felt a blank canvas background would focus the reader in specifically on the artist.
My artist profile for my feature article is shown on my cover, my contents page and then is the feature article on my double page spread. When writing my artist profile I wanted to ensure the bands background was involved and that the feeling that they were an up and coming band was felt so I could then put this across in my article. I then had to decide what I wanted their background to be, I wanted it to seem believable and resemble what the background to other more well-known bands are that resemble the type of music that my band produce. Therefore I did some research into the bands that may resemble this one, such as Elbow, R.E.M and The kings of Leon and made a past for my band by mixing a few of them together. I did this because I really wanted my profile and then my article to seem as if the band had fought for this from the very bottom and was finally getting the attention they deserve, making a real eye catching and gripping article for readers who want to learn more about a less known by rising in popularity band.
I believe my contents page attracts the whole spectrum of alternative rock fans. The massive attraction for many fans of this genre is the huge variety of music that this genre can open them up to. Therefore when choosing the artists and articles I would feature in my magazine I had to ensure that this feeling of variety was put across. I believe that I got this across by purely putting music articles in my magazine. After audience analysis I noticed that this genre of music and its fans were obsessed by music and were always listening to the radio or reading magazines to find the latest hits or new bands. Therefore I needed to completely focus my contents page on the variety of music available in this genre. I believe I have achieved this by covering both ends of the genre spectrum with bands such as MUSE, Snow patrol, Maroon 5, Coldplay and Noel Gallagher and the high flying birds.

Draft evaluation Question 1

I believe my draft magazine cover develops media conventions that are already used in the media world currently. Many parts of my magazine have been laid out or appear as other magazines are set out or appear. Firstly the banner develops current media conventions by being set out a lot like the magazine, NME. I analysed NME before creating my magazine and saw that the logo like banner worked very well but suited a very quick to read and small name of a magazine. Therefore when I decided on the name ‘Fix’ for my magazine I opted for the logo type banner because it would suit that type of magazine name a lot better than have the three letters spread across the top of the cover page.
Secondly, this then narrowed down my options for how I was going to set out my cover page. I didn’t want to come up with my own layout because this may seem too different to regular magazine readers and the layouts already out there on the market are very well structured and get across why the reader should purchase their magazine. I therefore decided to use the golden spiral method while also ensuring I used the rule of thirds to make a very well laid out magazine cover which also attracted the reader to the main stories by positioning them correctly. I rejected using the F or Z model because I decided I would like the picture to attract a lot more attention than the cover lines and I believed the golden spiral suited this lot better than the other two methods did.
Third, I decided on a colour scheme for my magazine. Again I decided to develop on already used conventions by adapting them to make a unique yet very familiar and standard looking colour scheme that I believe also suited my genre of music very well. After researching magazines such as NME, Kerrang, and Billboard I noticed that the pallet of three colours is regularly used and based around black and white. While doing my research I also noticed that red was regularly used by many magazines and seemed to also be a standard colour. I decided that I wanted to challenge that part of the convention and choose a different colour that came across bold and creative, representing the genre of music. I chose a very bright green because as well as meeting my other two points it also connotes a sense of neutrality which could also represent the varied music that can be heard in the one genre, a wide spectrum of different styles of music, fashion, attitudes and ideas.
Finally on by cover page I also went for a white background. This decision was also made based on my research of other magazines. Many of the covers were either showing a white background or a very neutral background. Therefore I decided to use this method on my cover page by keeping the cover page white underneath.
On my contents page I opted to combine two methods that I had seen while researching other magazine contents pages. While researching NME magazine I saw that they promoted their main feature articles with a small picture and description. This meant they were big names that the magazine expected their readers to recognise. I have done this on half of my magazine contents that show the three features of this week’s issue of my magazine. Then while researching Kerrang magazine I also saw that some magazines are laid out with just a simple list of what appears in its issue and where it will be found. I therefore thought mixing the two together would be a very different look for my magazine while also keeping the neat, structured and professional look that it needed to become a popular magazine.
Next, I had to decide whether to keep my colour scheme and fonts throughout my magazine. While getting rid of it could allow me to be more creative and make a very different looking magazine in comparison with the competing market I decided to keep the colour scheme through the magazine. I did this because I believed it gave the magazine a very recognisable look throughout and also made it easy and good looking for the user with the use of continuity throughout. Also after doing more research I saw that keeping the colour scheme throughout was the regular trend in the magazines that I would potentially compete against with my magazine.
When it came to creating my double page spread I already had an idea in mind that I believed would work very well and I had seen before I many magazines. I wanted to create a double page spread that had a main shot covering the left side and then the article on the opposite side. After the analysis section of my course I saw that this style was used in many feature articles in music magazines, therefore I decided to use this convention in my magazine. Then I decided to challenge the convention that the font changes on the articles to make them clearer to read. I decided to keep my fonts throughout to add to the sense of continuity and because my fonts were easy to read, they did not need to be changed throughout my magazine.
Overall, my analysis of other magazines that I would potentially compete against in the genre market was very important to me when creating my magazine as it made it a lot easier to create a very professional looking a very similar and familiar magazine for usual magazine readers. This should then hopefully bring readers of competing magazines into my magazine.

First Draft - Things i'll change on my next draft

I am relatively happy with my first draft and how it has turned out, however i still believe there are a few changes i would make to my next design. Firstly i have received feedback off fellow students telling me that the font i used for my cover lines and for my article does not suit my genre. On reflection i agree with them and believe the font would suit a more electro or dub step genre of magazine. Therefore to change the feel of my magazine i am now on the look for a new font that may be more suited to my genre. I want this font to still have a worn out look to it but maybe have the letters look a bit more structured and pointed.

I also believe that on reflection my article could be made a little bit longer to fill the page a bit more. At the moment it seems to me that the writing is too large and makes the article look very small. Therefore i will extend the article to make it look more real and professional. This will mean adding a couple more questions to the interview, however other than that i believe my double page spread looks very good indeed.

My final change that i know i will make already is i need to improve my cutting skills on my pictures. I believe they still look a little poor and could do with a little bit of work. I will correct this on my next draft by practicing further on my Photoshop skill until i really perfect the skill and make the magazine look a lot more professional and appealing.

My Pictures - Shots, costume and body language

After doing my test shots i now have a very clear idea of what shots i want to use and where exactly i shall use them, this also includes what the artist will wear and what there body language will be like. Firstly, on my cover page i am going to have a mid to long shot of my main artist, who is a single member of a new up and coming band. In this shot my artist will be wearing a pair of jeans and a very casual shirt and hopefully a pair of Vans shoes. They will have a casual and laid back feel to the shot with their hands in their pockets to give of this feel. They will have a smile on their face while looking directly at the camera, the camera will be placed slightly below them so that it gives the artist a feeling of power on the cover and makes the artist stand out and will hopefully attract readers.
On my contents page i am going to have three small pictures. One is going to be another long shot of my main artist laying on a bench looking at the camera which will be centrally positioned to the artist, they will still be smiling and looking very casual while wearing the same clothes. The position of him and the camera will hopefully give the reader the feel that they are with the artist and will portray the interview feel that the article will also cover.
Another will be of a single artist but a very different one. This one will be wearing very bright colours in a field of grass while doing a jump or energetic pose with the camera positioned for a long shot. This gives the reader the full view and shows the artist and their genre of music in a real light. I will then use the dot effect as seen in my test shots, this will give a very unusual and different picture which will then attract the reader and portray the artists genre of music again.
The last one will be a close up of a band gathered up staring straight at the magazine. The close up shot will give the feel of a close and tightly knit band. I will put them all in jeans and casual jumpers and will make sure they are laughing for the shot, this will again at to the chemistry of the band shown and interest the reader in the article because of the fun that it would contain.
My final picture is going to fill a whole side of my double page spread. Its going to be of my main artist again in the same clothes to give a feel of consistency throughout. They will be sat leaning forward on the bench and shot at a mid shot while staring straight at the magazine. Using the grey scale effect it will give the spread a casual yet fairly classy feel and the use of a mid shot and the artist looking at the camera it gives and interview feel and brings the reader into the article.

How my magazine will stand out

I plan to make my magazine stand out in a number of ways, these would then give my magazine the on the market edge compared to the already existing magazines such as NME and Q. Firstly im going to be using a very unique colour on my magazine. My colour pallet consists of green which is a very unused colour on music magazines that i researched previously. The use of a bright and unique colour will instantly draw in the readers attention. This will also help engage the reader with the splat or smoke effect layered on top of my magazine name. By having this it gives my magazine a very unique look and instantly draws in the readers attention to the name of my magazine, making it memorable to the reader.
Plus, as i previously said the use of the word Fix as my magazine title connotes the thought of drugs which are generally thought of when the media and the general public talk about alternative rock as a genre.

Test Shots

Although my test shots aren't of my model, this gave me a chance to experiment with the type of shot that i want to use in my shots. For my double page spread i thought a mid shot of my artist sitting down would be good as it shows a calm and casual feel to the spread. By having the camera level on with the artist it makes the reader see as if we are looking into his eyes from our own perspective.

However i feel by having the picture in a gray scale effect it gives it a more casual yet smart feel to the picture. This also resembles the pictures that are usually seen of the band i want my main artist to look like, Elbow. However, when looking back at the pictures i think a gray scale picture which is shot so it looks as if hes looking down on us would suit better. This would make the artist seem powerful and strong which is also represented in the fact the article is on about how the band are becoming a very powerful one.

For my front cover i was thinking about having a mid to long shot to show the image of the artist in body language and also the clothing that they will be wearing. I also wanted to show the artist in a natural effect so it is easily recognizable to the reader and gives off the body language of the artist easily. Therefore this type of shot would be ideal.

However i believe a more face on shot would be better for the cover of my magazine because its more engaging and makes it easy to see the artist and their expression, bringing in the reader. I do believe that for my magazine shoot i should make my artist do a more energetic and exciting expression, this would engage the reader more and make it more interesting to them, hopefully then tempting them into buying it.

Then, on my contents page i also need an extra picture of a different artist. I chose to make this article about MUSE, they are a more exciting and bolder band. Therefore i thought this effect would work very well for that picture. I believe this effect would work very well if i got my artist into a bright coloured outfit and got them to do an energetic pose, it would look very different and work well with the bands style.
